Four dedicated veterinary professionals, united by a shared passion for animal care and community service, came together—along with the support of their families—to bring a bold vision for a new clinic to life.
Through careful planning, collaboration, and countless hours of hard work, they designed and built a brand-new veterinary clinic from the ground up.
Today, their mixed animal practice proudly serves both rural and urban clients within a 50-kilometre radius of Onoway, Alberta.
With a commitment to compassionate, exceptional patient care, this team is here to support the health and well-being of animals large and small, right where their clients need them most.
I was raised on a large mixed animal farm at Fallis, AB. My family farmed nearly everything from chickens to bison and I shared my parents love of caring for the livestock and pets as I pursued a career in veterinary medicine.
I received my BSc in Agriculture in 1992 from the University of Alberta. I went on to The Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, SK, receiving my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1996.
I have enjoyed mixed animal practice in the community of Onoway since graduation. I love the variety of the work including beef, dairy, horse, small animal, small ruminants, a lot of pet pigs and (nearly) everything in between.
Outside of work, I have 2 daughters, an acreage with horses, cows, a dog and barn cats. Other interests include trail riding, cattle sorting, travelling, quilting and scrapbooking. I have been a leader for the 4H Veterinary Science project since 2002.
I like mentoring students and hope to inspire future veterinarians to love mixed animal practice and the community that supports them.
Val, originally from rural Manitoba, began her veterinary journey after graduating from Fairview College’s Animal Health Technology program. She gained hands-on experience at Onoway Veterinary Clinic during her practicum, later working at Stony Plain Veterinary Clinic before returning to Onoway, where she remained in various roles until 2024. That year, she founded MorEnergy Veterinary Services Ltd., driven by a passion for animal care and a desire to build a practice rooted in community and excellence.
Val thrives in the dynamic environment of mixed animal practice, with a special love for large animal work. Her career has also included extensive teaching roles since 2005, instructing Veterinary Medical Receptionist and Animal Health Technologist programs at Lakeland College, Olds College, and NAIT. She played a key role in launching several innovative programs, including the first online Animal Health Technology program and a Production Animal Ultrasound Pregnancy Detection course now offered at multiple institutions.
In addition to clinical and teaching work, Val provides contract porcine services, teaches in Olds College’s Veterinary Practice Management Certificate program, and serves on the board of the Farming Forward Association.
In 2014, Val was honored with the Canadian Animal Health Technologist of the Year Award, recognizing her dedication and impact in the field.
Outside the clinic, Val enjoys life on her family’s ranch near Rich Valley with her husband Devin and their two sons, Brock and Bennett. Together, they raise purebred and crossbred cattle, ride horses, and travel for hockey.
I’m a Registered Veterinary Technologist graduating from NAIT in 1997.
I began my career working for Alberta Agriculture as a technician for the Swine Research Team. From there I moved to a position in the Pathology Department of Alberta Agriculture assisting the pathologists to determine disease processes in livestock production animals. As Alberta Agriculture’s focus shifted the position shifted to increased disease surveillance within the province with much attention on BSE and CWD.
During my time with Alberta Agriculture I completed my B.Sc at Concordia University.
After our 3 kids were born I stayed home to raise kids and cattle. I became very involved in 4H with the kids becoming the beef and general leader of the Duffield 4H Club.
In 2021, I returned to work as an RVT working in a clinic setting for the first time at Onoway Veterinary Clinic until beginning this adventure.
I was raised on a cow/calf operation in southern Alberta. I have always had a passion for animals and decided in Grade 8 that I wanted to be a veterinarian.
I received my BSc in Agriculture with Distinction in 1995 from the University of Alberta. I then went to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, SK and finished my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1999.
I started at a mixed animal practice in Camrose, AB and then a year later landed in Barrhead, AB where I have spent most of my career in a mixed animal practice.
I took a year off in the fall 2019 to 2020 and have been practicing in Onoway part time for the last 4 years.
I was able to explore my artistic side by taking up oil painting. I also love to travel, take photographs and garden. For 13 years I was a Girl Guide leader as well as District Commissioner.
I am excited to be starting this business with a fantastic group of women!
